Herkimer Diamonds formed approximately 500 million years ago, within ancient sedimentary rock dating to the Cambrian period.
Silica-rich fluids entered small cavities within the surrounding dolostone. Over immense periods of time, quartz slowly crystallized inside these open spaces. Because the crystals had sufficient room to develop freely, many formed naturally with points at both ends.
The result is the beautifully formed double-terminated quartz crystal for which Herkimer specimens are so highly regarded.
What is a Herkimer Diamond?
Despite its name, a Herkimer Diamond is not a true diamond. It is an exceptionally clear variety of naturally double-terminated quartz crystal.
The name originates from Herkimer County in New York State, where these distinctive crystals became particularly famous. Their remarkable clarity, natural faceting, and pointed terminations often give them a brilliant, diamond-like appearance.
