Crystals Born Within Ancient Rock

How old is this piece?

Herkimer Diamonds formed approximately 500 million years ago, within ancient sedimentary rock dating to the Cambrian period.

Silica-rich fluids entered small cavities within the surrounding dolostone. Over immense periods of time, quartz slowly crystallized inside these open spaces. Because the crystals were able to grow without being attached to the surrounding rock on one end, many developed natural points at both ends.

The result is the remarkably clear and beautifully formed double-terminated quartz crystal for which Herkimer specimens are famous.

What is a Herkimer Diamond?

Despite its name, a Herkimer Diamond is not a true diamond. It is an exceptionally clear variety of double-terminated quartz crystal.

The name comes from Herkimer County in New York State, where these distinctive crystals became particularly well known. Genuine Herkimer Diamonds are associated specifically with this geological region and its surrounding deposits.

Their naturally occurring double termination, remarkable clarity, and brilliant crystal faces often give them a diamond-like appearance—hence their famous name.

What Makes a Matrix Specimen Special?

A crystal in matrix remains naturally attached to the original host rock in which it formed.

These specimens offer a fascinating glimpse into the crystal's geological environment. Rather than displaying an isolated crystal, the matrix preserves the relationship between the sparkling quartz and the ancient rock surrounding it.

Each arrangement is entirely unique. The size, position, clarity, and orientation of the individual crystals were determined naturally as they grew within small cavities over millions of years.

A Natural Geological Masterpiece

This substantial 1.32 kg Herkimer Diamond matrix specimen beautifully preserves the contrast between brilliant quartz crystals and their rugged natural host rock.

Its sparkling crystal points change character as they catch the light from different angles, while the untouched matrix provides depth, texture, and a sense of its extraordinary geological origin.

Whether selected for a mineral collection or displayed as a distinctive natural object within a sophisticated interior, this Natural Herkimer Diamond Crystal specimen in matrix is a one-of-a-kind piece that captures crystal formation exactly as nature intended.
