A Stone Shaped by Ancient Seas

How old is this piece?

This Septarian slice was formed approximately 50–70 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleogene period, when much of the Earth was covered by shallow inland seas. Septarian nodules began as rounded balls of mud and sediment that accumulated on ancient sea floors.

As the mud dried and shrank, natural cracks formed inside the nodule. Over time, mineral-rich groundwater flowed through these cracks, filling them with crystals—most commonly golden calcite, brown aragonite, and grey limestone. Millions of years later, erosion revealed these remarkable formations, creating the distinctive mosaic-like patterns seen today.

Why is it called Septarian?

The name Septarian comes from the Latin word septum, meaning "partition" or "divider," referring to the natural cracks that divide the stone into beautiful geometric sections.

Although Septarian can be found in several parts of the world, Madagascar is especially renowned for producing exceptionally colourful and beautifully polished specimens with striking contrast between the golden crystal veins and the surrounding stone.
